About the Osborne ETA Symposium

“Achieving one’s promise is the gift of a lifetime, endowing the human experience with nobility.”

– Richard L. Osborne, “The Gorilla”

A Legacy That Still Shapes What We Build

The Osborne ETA Symposium honors the legacy of Professor Richard L. Osborne, affectionately known as “The Gorilla,” a beloved professor at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management and a founding member of Promise Partners. Osborne began teaching entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA) in the 1970s, making Case Western Reserve University one of the first schools in the world to introduce this innovative approach as a formal discipline and pathway into entrepreneurship.

Long before ETA became widely recognized, Osborne introduced students to the idea that business ownership through acquisition could be a powerful path to leadership, value creation, and long-term impact.

Named one of Businessweek’s top entrepreneurship professors in the 1990s, Osborne became known not simply for teaching entrepreneurship but for shaping entrepreneurs through practical experience, high expectations, and enduring mentorship. His nickname, “The Gorilla,” reflected his commanding presence and the culture he intentionally created. Every student in his classes received a nickname, a surprisingly human ritual that broke down barriers, built connections, and reinforced the sense that entrepreneurship is ultimately a personal journey.

His philosophy was rooted in action. As former Invacare CEO Mal Mixon once said, Richard Osborne believed in the “book of life” rather than the “life of books.”

That mindset remains central to the Symposium today: practical learning, real operators, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to helping the next generation of acquisition entrepreneurs succeed.

Why the Weatherhead ETA Center and Promise Partners Built This Together

Successful ETA journeys require more than information.

They require preparation. Perspective. Trusted relationships. Access to people who have done the work.

That belief is what makes the collaboration between Weatherhead’s Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition Center and Promise Partners so distinctive.

Weatherhead brings structured education, leadership development, and a growing pipeline of future acquisition entrepreneurs.

Promise Partners brings decades of practitioner experience, mentorship, operator insight, and a proven community of entrepreneurs who have successfully acquired and led businesses.

Together, they create something neither could deliver alone: a bridge between academic preparation and real-world execution.

This partnership reflects the best of ETA, rigorous preparation paired with practical action, individual ambition strengthened by a pay-it-forward community.

The Role of the Symposium

The Osborne ETA Symposium was created as the annual convening point for this ecosystem and to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Promise Partners.

What began as a focused gathering has evolved into a flagship ETA event that brings together aspiring acquirers, active searchers, owner-operators, investors, advisors, lenders, and ecosystem builders for an execution-focused experience designed to accelerate progress.

This is not a conference built around theory or passive inspiration.

It is designed to help serious participants move forward.

From acquisition strategy and diligence to financing, leadership transition, and post-acquisition growth, the Symposium connects participants with practical learning, operator insight, and meaningful access to the broader ETA community.

It is also a reflection of what makes this ecosystem work: generous practitioners, practical learning, and a belief that successful entrepreneurs help prepare the next generation.

Looking Ahead

The Symposium continues to evolve alongside the ETA community it serves.

As this platform grows, we aim to make valuable programming, insights, and resources more accessible beyond the event itself, helping more members of the acquisition community learn from the experience and expertise shared here.

That ambition will grow thoughtfully, in step with the strength of the community and the opportunities to serve it well.
